September 25, Here it is! I've picked out my three favorite sequences from my training at Pixar's Story Internship this summer. It was a very rewarding three months in this intense and inspiring environment.
Working on pen and paper and pitching to an audience on gigantic bulletin boards was vastly different than anything I had ever done before.
I learned a lot from the professionals at the studio and my fellow interns and was overall an incredible experience. The blood, sweat and tears I put in to keep up with my internship at Pixar and continued work with Invader Zim was absolutely worth the hustle.
I may go back and do a clean up pass on one or two of these, but for now, please enjoy! A sequence based on an event in my own life, for the final assignment at Pixar. Trying to escape the stress of my school and home life, only to find the chaos had followed me to what was supposed to be a relaxing winter vacation.

The Pixar Process
Anyone invited in at any time Other room: Story Room Go over ideas and scripts Is this scene working? Should we even do it? Discuss pages, director reads through script and gives notes to artists. Lots of hidden directions in read through. Then artists go off to start drawing.
There were 97, storyboards for Onward. Once artist has done sequence, time for the pitch. Watch storyboards.
Always applaud after every single pitch. A performance. Put the Protagonist in the drivers seat of their own story. Keep focus on the Protagonist. Identify with them. Workshop changes on screen. Director: That was my last note. Does anyone have any suggestions? Scratch: In-house voice acting. Scratch acting. Dan Scanlan did scratch acting for Ian. Once artist makes changes and record scratch, off to edit. Temporary music and SFX. Timing fixed. Go to editorial bay. All Pixar internships are paid positions and take place in Emeryville, CA. Interns must be eligible to work in the US and must be enrolled in university or within one year of graduating.
Be sure to apply for internships well in advance, as positions are highly competitive. Internships typically last 12 weeks to 6 months and are offered during the Summer, Fall, and Winter semesters. But how does Pixar come up with those characters, make them more than just generic ideas, and really bring them to life? Introduction to character. Internal vs. Every story that is told has a foundation, or structure. Introduction to structure. While telling almost any story involves words, characters and structure, making a film involves another aspect of storytelling that Pixar thinks a lot about: visual language.
Visual language refers to how imagery is used to convey story ideas or meanings. Perspective, color, and shape can all be used to support a story by guiding the audience to see and feel certain things. Introduction to visual language. Film grammar.Are you a comic book fan? Have you been drawing since a young age?
This job profile takes a look behind-the-scenes of what a storyboard artist actually does. A storyboard artist is someone who takes a script or just a concept and turns the words into a visual story. All different members of the production or development team look at storyboards for reference. Clarity of the boards is important.
And the storyboard artist has to convey everything from gestures to emotion, with minimal or no words or dialogue. Storyboard artists draw scenes explaining the story. They are visual storytellers. The methods that storyboarders use vary from artist to artist.
The uniformity of the storyboards help maintain clarity of the vision. In some ways, storyboard artists are drawing a comic book of the movie or video game. In addition to visualizing scenes, the storyboard artist will need to describe camera movement. Based on preference, you can visualize scenes on the computer or by hand. Technical descriptions have a place. That sometimes means using text to explain specifics in greater detail, or listing details from a technical standpoint.
On a video game project, storyboard artists might work on more than just visualizing the scenes. Your pitch is where you bring the visuals even further to life. You walk the director or whoever it is through the entire story, narrating and describing your boards. This can involve sound effects so start practicing your explosions and spaceship sounds now.
You need to take your pitch recipient into the story and keep them there. Storyboarding cinematics for video games is just like storyboarding for television or film. A quick Google search will turn up a number of interviews with the man.
As a successful storyboard artist, he has a lot of wisdom to bestow nudge, nudge. You might be wondering how long your portfolio should be… He recommends pages worth of boards. Keep them big enough to be legible—Mathot recommends panels per page.
Clarity is the most important thing. Choose the panels that really showcase what you can do. This means you should be picky. Wow them quickly, show them you value their time.
As for the subject matter, a Mathot says a little personality can go a long way. We also really like to see personal work — something that you created yourself or experienced in your life. There are a number of tools on the web that can help you out. Very good drawing skills are important. Your storyboards need to clearly convey a scene. All the time. The best jobs are the most competitive.
And you can bet that someone out there, who wants that job, is drawing every day. You have to be working harder than your competition, and that means drawing every chance you get. The people working at Pixar now tell stories about being up all night trying to draw during high school.Email Address.
You admire a character for trying more than for their successes. They can be very different. Now rewrite. Combine characters. Hop over detours. What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal? Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Endings are hard, get yours working up front. In an ideal world you have both, but move on. Do better next time.
Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up. Pull apart the stories you like. Putting it on paper lets you start fixing it. Discount the 1st thing that comes to mind. And the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th — get the obvious out of the way. Surprise yourself. Give your characters opinions. Why must you tell THIS story? If you were your character, in this situation, how would you feel?
How to get a job at Pixar Animation Studios
Honesty lends credibility to unbelievable situations. What are the stakes? Give us reason to root for the character. Stack the odds against. No work is ever wasted. Story is testing, not refining.
